Password Security

In a world with increasing amounts of personalized online accounts, it’s important to keep your passwords secure at all times. Because your security is our number one priority, we’ve provided this information to help you in maintaining utmost personal security.

Never Share Your Password

Your password is for you, and you alone. Sharing your password, even with those you trust, is taking an unneccessary risk. Even if you would trust someone with your life, there’s no guarantee that their security habits are as rigorous as yours.

Use Different Passwords for each Account

It’s tempting to use one password for everything, so you only have to remember one. The problem with this technique is that if a hacker gets your password by breaking into a site with low-level security they then have your password for even the most secure sites. Don’t take that risk. Use unique credentials for each site.

Create a Strong Password

There are several ways to strengthen a password. By using as many of these as you can, you can be ensured against hackers and “brute force” scripts (scripts that find passwords by trying every option). Below is a list of some of these password-strengtheners. The more of these you can use*, the stronger your password will be.

  • Use uppercase letters
  • Use lowercase letters
  • Use numerical characters (0-9)
  • Use special characters (! @ # $ % ^ & * and others)
  • Make your password longer than 8 characters

* Some systems don’t allow the use of all of these techniques. A good practice is to use as many as are allowed.

Make it Personal

You shouldn’t write your password down (for obvious reasons), so make it something you can easily remember—but don’t make it something that your friends and family could guess. One good technique for doing this is abbreviating a sentence (Example: “My three sisters each have boats!” = “M3sehb!”)

Change it Regularly

And finally, to safeguard against consequences in case someone does get your password, you should change it regularly. A responsible password duration is 90 days.
